Werner Fornos
Secretary/Treasurer
Werner Fornos has served as President of the Population Institute since 1982, following a
long career in public service at both the state and federal government levels and as a
management consultant in family planning programs throughout the world. He is a
Rotary International Paul Harris Fellow and an elected fellow of the International Union
for the Scientific Study of Population. He has been presented with the Humanist of the
Year award by the American Humanist Society, as well as the Cross of the Order of
Merit --- the highest award the Federal Republic of Germany can bestow upon a non-
German. He recently received the Distinguished Alumnus of the Year Award from the
University of Maryland. Werner has lectured widely on the consequences of
overpopulation and has addressed every major international conference on population
from the historic 1974 World Population Conference in Bucharest, Romania, to the 1994
International Conference on Population and Development in Cairo, Egypt. As a
consultant in family planning program implementation, effectiveness and innovation, he
has worked with the U.S. Agency for International Development, the American Public
Health Association and Westinghouse Health Systems. Werner is a former Executive
Director of Planned Parenthood.
German A. Bravo-Casas
Colombian. Joined the United Nations in January 1978 as
UNFPA Regional Coordinator (Mexico, Central America, Cuba, Haiti and Dominican
Republic) and served as Evaluation Officer at UNFPA headquarters. In 1982 was
transferred to the Population Division of the Department of International Economic and
Social Affairs (DIESA) of the Secretariat, as Coordinator for the Implementation of the
World Population Conference. Retired in June 1999 after serving for three years as
Population and Development Specialist for the interagency Technical Support Services
system (TSS). Previously worked as Director of the Socio-Demographic Division of the
Ministry of National Planning of Colombia, Technical Secretary of the National
Population Council of Colombia, and professor at the Javeriana, National and Andes
universities in Bogota, Colombia. Studied Sociology and Development Issues at the
Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium, and Sociology, Population and Ecology at the
University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, USA. Speaks English, French and Spanish.
Pascale Gustin
Pascale Gustin works for Honeywell Belgium, a company that regulates energy for the
industrial sector. She has been there, in various capacities since 1990. She now holds the
post of order administrator. She is a former intern of the Population Institute (1989) and
maintains close ties with them, assisting especially in European conferences and travel.
She completed her education at the Institut Marie Stella in Brussels, and her professional
degree from the Ecole d'hôtellerie de Spa in Belgium. She enjoys reading, biking, gymnastics
and spending time in her home with her family.
Liu Hanbin
Member of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), Vice President of the China Family Planning Association, former Vice Minister of the State Family Planning Committee (SFPC) of China, Vice President of the Population Welfare Foundation of China. While Vice Minister of SFPC, he was responsible for contraceptives and contributed greatly to the availability and accessibility of contraceptives. He developed the population management information system, leading the development of CFPA as a pioneer of the Chinese NGO movement. Under his leadership, CFPA made the strategic plan and made its Constitution Revision focusing on the role of the NGO in reproductive rights. He is a strong advocate for ICPD by writing reports to the government and the congress promoting attention to the prevention of HIV/AIDS.
Shiv Khare
Executive Director, Asian Forum of Parliamentarians on Population
and Development (AFPPD); former Secretary-General, World Assembly of Youth (WAY), Copenhagen, Denmark; former General Secretary, Indian Assembly of Youth, New Delhi, India; has attended world population conferences in Bucharest, Mexico, Cairo and then follow-up in
The Hague.
Kit Kitatani
Worked for the United Nations from 1962 to 1993, culminating in UNDP Resident Representative in Myanmar (1986-1990) and Assistant Secretary-General/Deputy Executive Director, UN Population Fund (1990-1993). Since his retirement from the United Nations in 1993 and till 2000, has served as Senior Advisor to UNDP.
In 1994,established "2050" as an organization designed to promote awareness among the Japanese public of such global issues as the environment, population, poverty and also dedicated to enhancing women's status in the developing countries through education and revenue producing activities;
Also a member of the Advisory Committee of the Foundation for Global Environment and Peace. Actively participates in international meetings and delivers speeches all over Japan and in other countries on global issues.
Gunta Lazdane, MD
President, Latvian Association for Family Planning and Sexual Health; Currently Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Academy of Latvia in Riga. She represented the organization as well as her country in several international meetings, such as ICPD in Cairo in 1994 and the International Conference for Women in Beijing in 1995. Has published more than 50 articles on reproductive health issues.
Dr. Florence Manguyu
A consultant pediatrician in clinical practice in Kenya. Former President of the Medical Women's International Association. Chaired the NGO Forum of the UN International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) in Cairo in 1994 and is a member of several management boards at local and international levels. An advocate for the health and welfare of women and children both in her home country and internationally.
Erica Nybro
Erica Nybro has just completed a year working at The Population Institute in
Washington, DC where she was familiarized with Population 2005. She is now heading
to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to pursue a Masters Degree in Public
Health with a specialty in international maternal and child health. She graduated from
The College of William and Mary in 2000 with a degree in Sociology and French. She
conducted honors thesis research in Southern Africa on the correlation between education
and the AIDS pandemic and hopes to continue this research in upcoming years.
Nina Puri
President of the Family Planning Association of India (FPAI); Chairperson of South Asia Region of International Planned Parenthood
Federation (IPPF) and Member of Governing Council and Chairperson of
Membership Committee of IPPF; Member, National Commission on Population, Government of India; member of numerous national advisory and policy making bodies on reproductive health, education and family welfare; has written and lectured extensively on population and women's issues.

Prof. Dr. Robert Zinser
Professor Dr. Robert Zinser studied Economic Sciences and made his career in BASF, a chemical company. He is an Honorary University Professor for "International Management." He was honored with the "Officers Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany" and with "The Order of Diplomatic Service Merit" of the Republic of Korea. He was District Governor of Rotary International. He was Co-Chairman of the Rotary Pilot Project "Child Spacing and Family Health" in Nigeria which serves as a model in Rotary International. He is Co-Founder of the "Rotarian Initiative for Population & Development" (RIFPD). Since 2003 he has been Chairman and European Coordinator of the worldwide acting RIFPD.
